It is finished.

It is finished! John 19:30 – Jesus stated this truth to the world as he died on the cross. The word “finished” here in the original Greek is “teleo.” In the Greek, the word implies complete finality as in a debt paid in full. Here authorities unfairly convicted Jesus, completely innocent of sin, and sentenced him to die a most gruesome death.  If Jesus himself had nothing for which to atone, who owed the debt paid by our Lord?  It was ours.

For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Rom 5:6-8

When Jesus died, He fulfilled our sentence; With irrevocable finality, He paid our debt, our punishment in full.  May we, on this Good Friday, solemnly remember His great love and sacrifice for us. Let us joyfully look forward, for in three days we celebrate our Savior’s resurrection and His victory over death and the Devil.
