Abortion is the deliberate termination of a pregnancy, often involving the use of medication like Mifepristone to achieve this without surgery. Significantly, our government fails to recognize how the FDA circumvented normal legal requirements to make this drug regulated and widely available. The drug mifepristone does not cure or aid in any disease; its primary purpose is to destroy human life through the termination of pregnancies and possible side effects to the mother.
What Is Mifepristone?
Mifepristone, also known as RU-486 or the abortion pill, is a medication that works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining pregnancy. (United States Government, 2023) By blocking progesterone, mifepristone causes the lining of the uterus to break down, leading to the detachment of the embryo from the uterine wall and the starvation of the unborn child, ultimately resulting in the termination of the pregnancy. Mifepristone is commonly used for medical abortion, which is a non-surgical method of terminating early pregnancies during the first 10 weeks of gestational life.
“Mifepristone is used in combination with misoprostol, a prostaglandin, to cause an abortion. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, leading to the death of the unborn baby, while the second drug, misoprostol, causes powerful, painful uterine contractions to expel the dead or dying baby.” (Right To Life, 2023) The act of terminating a pregnancy is inherently considered to be harsh and severe for both the woman and her unborn child. Not only is the woman intentionally killing a human being, she is also experiencing traumatic physical and mental complications.
Risks Accompanied With Mifepristone
Numerous claims from abortion providers and organizations like the FDA or Planned Parenthood exclaim that chemical abortion is safe. However, there are a plethora of unwanted and serious side effects when going through with the abortion pill. The most common side effects associated with Mifepristone are, “Bleeding (which on average can last between 14 to 21 days), cramping, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.” (Johanna G., n.d.) The more serious complication are, “Damage to the womb or cervix, excessive bleeding, incomplete abortion (requiring an additional surgical abortion procedure), infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes, scarring of the inside of the uterus, sepsis or septic shock, uterine perforation and death.” (Johanna G., n.d.) While these risks and complications are being reported, there lacks a comprehensive system for reporting abortion complications and there has been minimal oversight in this regard.
Mifepristone Is Dangerous
Mifepristone does not improve public health, rather the complete opposite. According to the National Right to Life movement, “The only way that the FDA could justify considering, much less approving, an application for a drug developed for killing human children was ignoring its own mandate, by going against the basic principles of medicine, by ignoring the basic facts of biology, and by giving politics priority over public health.” (O’Bannon, 2023) The truth is Mifepristone kills and the FDA expedited the approval of Mifepristone through a process intended for the treatment of life-threatening illnesses, bypassing all legal requirements. Our government needs to recognize this and abort the use of this dangerous, destructive drug.
Conclusion
The 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a ruling to restrict the availability of Mifepristone. In 2000 when the use of Mifepristone was launched, the court found that the FDA did not adequately test the drug’s side effects. “The court’s decision will also limit access to the ‘abortion pill’ to 7 weeks instead of 10 and requires that it be prescribed by a physician.” (Johanna G., n.d.) The case will now proceed to the Supreme Court for a final ruling, where our staff has filed a brief advocating for good governance, the rule of law, and government protection of all human life. Any new restrictions imposed by the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals will remain pending until the Supreme Court issues its decision on the matter. What we want the courts to see is that the drug mifepristone does not cure or aid in the treatment of any disease; its primary purpose is to cause the destruction of human life.
