Slavery / Trafficking

Human trafficking is the single fastest growing criminal activity around the world, with a record number of nearly 30 million children, women, and men enslaved and exploited around the world today.

Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

- Isaiah 58:6-7

He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.

- Exodus 21:16

Learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow’s cause.

- Isaiah 1:17

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;

- Isaiah 61:1

Cursed be anyone who perverts the justice due to the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’

- Deuteronomy 27:19

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

- Matthew 25:40

Scripture speaks volumes on the practice of human trafficking (modern day slavery). Human trafficking is the single fastest growing criminal activity around the world, with a record number of nearly 30 million children, women, and men enslaved and exploited around the world today. Scripture teaches that each one of those exploited persons is someone created in the image of God (Genesis 1:37) that Jesus died to save (2 Corinthians 5:15).

Bible verses about slavery, as well as passages on how we should treat others, inform us of just how seriously God cares about oppression, justice, equality, and freedom are extensive. The words of the prophet Isaiah are fulfilled by Jesus in Luke 4:18-19, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” As followers of Jesus, we are called to go and go likewise—to be His hands and feet in the word around us, to see the world as He sees it, and to carry His heart to all people. The problem of human trafficking is one of the greatest injustices of our time, and it is imperative that church pray (James 5:16), speak (Proverbs 31:8-9), and act (Matthew 7:12) in a manner consistent with God’s Word on this issue. Like the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, this gross indignity against people created in the image of God will only end when the people of God stand up.
